Tutoring with Joshua Kindler

Aristotle Head.png

Hello — thank you for your interest in working with me!

I tutor full-time for all sections of the SAT and ACT, and I am currently accepting new clients for the March and April exams.

I have been teaching and tutoring for over eight years, including as a private calculus tutor and a TA for college-level math and linguistics courses. I graduated from the University of Chicago with an honors A.B. in philosophy, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. I specialize in logic, the branch of philosophy concerned with what makes a valid argument or inference.

I strongly believe in forming a friendly, interpersonal rapport with all of my students. Given my background, I also like to integrate logic into my teaching and approach questions from creative angles.

If you are interested in working together, I would love to hear from you. Please reach out at joshuarkindler@gmail.com, and I will be in touch shortly!

FAQs about Tutoring with Joshua

What does the tutoring process look like from start to finish?

  1. I like to begin by meeting with both a parent and student for an introductory call, where we can get to know each other and talk about goals. During our first session of tutoring, my student and I will create a timeline for our work together, scheduling regular practice tests in advance of test day. We will also identify key subject areas based on their diagnostic exam.

  2. In our sessions together, my student and I will begin with content accumulation. I will review, or sometimes teach from scratch, concepts that are difficult or unfamiliar. Concurrently, I will assign content-based worksheets for homework, which we will review during our sessions. As we progress over the following weeks and month, we will shift more and more towards integrating content with test-taking strategies. Practice sections for homework and full-length practice tests also serve as opportunities to regroup and identify the content areas that need most attention.

  3. In the week or so before test day, we will do a final review of all the content we learned, test-taking strategies we outlined, and the personal best practices (regarding timing, solving strategies, etc.) that we developed together. I will also provide a host of review materials I have created, including a cheat sheet of the most important math formulas, compilation of grammar rules with examples, and comprehensive memo of required background knowledge for science and data analysis questions.

How often do you have sessions, and how long will tutoring take?

I prefer to work with my students for two, 90-minute sessions per week. I feel that this pace keeps up a strong momentum and allows us to make fast progress. I also assign homework to supplement our work during sessions. At this pace, my students are usually fully prepared for their exam after about two-to-three months. If a student is particularly busy with extracurriculars, plays a sport, or has another time constraint, though, this schedule can be adjusted to fit a longer timeline.

What sort of score increase can we expect?

Of course, score increases are case-by-case. It's cliche, but the more you put in, the more you get out. To get the most out of our preparation together, I always encourage my students to be as diligent as they can with their homework, try to come to sessions fully focused, and ask me as many questions as they can when they feel any uncertainty. I also believe a friendly, personal rapport is critical to stay motivated and enjoy the work together :)

Do you recommend the ACT or the SAT? Which did you take?

I took the ACT, but I tutor all sections of both exams. Before starting to work with a student, I will ask them to complete a diagnostic ACT and SAT to determine which test is the best personal fit.

What if I don't live in New York?

No problem! I work with all of my students over Zoom.
